Clothing and makeup for self or society?!

Clothing and makeup for self or society?!

I’m the person who doesn’t value clothing as much as many of my friends. I’m pretty casual for the most part unless there’s a special occasion or I just feel like doing extra work… for a party, wedding, or something along those lines.  I don’t wear a lot of makeup. I’ve had locs for the past several years and I usually wear my hair down with a headband or in ponytail. Nails? I do my own. As you may have read in another article of mine, I recently tried a polygel nail kit and designs that does everything I need it to so I don’t feel the need to go to the nail salon at all.

Prior to transitioning to working from home, I preferred my casual dress at work. I would dress up when we had special guests but for the most part, I would wear jeans, Nikes, All-stars, suitable athletic wear, and t-shirts. Why? Because I love being comfortable as much as possible. Don’t get it twisted, when it’s time for me to represent,  I don’t disappoint… me. I don’t disappoint me but maybe others have a different opinion. We have our ‘thing’ that we are known for. Everyone that knows me well knows that I’m a techy person. I love anything electronic, especially when it’s just come out. I’m that girl that may be the first person you know to own an object you’ve seen on commercials. I’m also a lover of book and anything pertaining to cars. I’m that chic that will use money that some women use on handbags, expensive perfume, shoes, and hair for an aftermarket exhaust or coilovers for one of my vehicles. These are the things I love and treasure and I hurt no one with my indulgence of the things I love and treasure. Truth be told, those that I know who place a lot of value on clothing and shoes don’t value a variety of things that I value. I’m referring to things that require skill, creativity, study, self-care and such.  I’m referring to items that do not require a wash in the washing machine, wash by hand, or trip to the cleaners. They’re conversation is also very different from mine. I will buy clothing as needed. Period! I won’t buy items that I will not be wearing pretty soon. Trust and believe, I will exercise the return policy if it’s something that I will not use. Just anyone who really knows me.

I say all of this to encourage others to not be pressured to dress and invest energy into things that you do not find important. The way I see it, I’m not a bad looking person by any means and that along with my personality is what gets me the right attention and deters me from the wrong kind of attention. The reason being is because when you meet me, you meet my huge personality and brilliant mind which is far more valuable to the world than my clothing and shoes. Miss me with that!  What are your thoughts ? Just speak on it!

  1. Hey! Its all about you finding you. I really relate to his as it is clear you know who you are and are confident in that. I believe it takes people time to get there. I enjoy hearing and learning about people and their reasons for what they prefer and why that is important to them as it helps you know a person. So many people can’t articulate what they like, prefer, enjoy, or would buy instead. I love that you point out that personality and mindset are more valuable then things you can put a price tag on. So many don’t get this, but that is all due to mindset. I don’t think there is a problem if people prefer to spend on cloths, shows, but I like to hope as you hit on earlier hopefully there is more to them then that. A well rounded person is priceless and continuing to grow knowledge and learn things are essential. The transparency is just as valuable, many people stray away from this… but how can someone really know who you are if you lack this. Great read!

    1. Hi Kjoi! I can’t help but think of the saying “be comfortable in the skin you’re in”. For me, this goes deeper than my clothes and makeup. For me, a big part of who I am is not my clothing at all. It’s my personality. I know people who are great dressers but they lack variety in conversation which can be offputting. They can talk about the latest trends in fashion or whatever but that is the least of my worries. I’ve reached a point of being the person who put may not have planned my outfit as well as others in a setting, but I have a way of connecting and leaving a lasting impression for my personality. It’s truly a skill.
