During this pandemic, I’ve come to appreciate older and gently used items over new items. I moved in my home just weeks for my job sent us homework last March. In efforts to furnish my new “old” home, I found some jewels at the Goodwill and even on the curb of my neighbor’s houses on trash day. Things that were no longer any use to them were just perfect for me. Granted, some items needed to be recovered such as vanity stools, then there’s end tables, bookcases… you name it. Nothing a little sanding and painting couldn’t help. I’ve never considered myself an interior decorator. I knew how to match items sometimes to a fault. For instance, I felt that the patterns had to be the exact same for each room, or better yet, multiple shades of the same color were not allowed even in multicolored items. Boy did I limit myself? Pulling various colors from various items in a room was the solution to my color drama. Why not utilize multiple shades of wood, gray, and other colors? Is there a rule against doing so? Some of the rooms I’ve admired most from TV and magazines do just that. They mix it all together and the results are gorgeous.
I’ve decorated each room in my home with something new and something more on the style of vintage or antique. That’s right. Contemporary and traditional complement each other well with a little practice. There was a time when I would not dare buy furniture for my living room and bedrooms separately. Everything had to come as a set. Not only was that limiting to my sense of style but it was also added stress to my shopping cart and wallet.
Old and new have so much to share with each other. Just think about it. This extends beyond people. Creativity is about trying out new things and going against the norm. I challenge you to try it. You just may stumble upon some gems! Or have you already?…
Just speak on it! 2/2/21
